The Gift of Human Rights – A Spirituality for Our Time

Edmund Rice International are offering a workshop in Queensland later this month that will invite participants to explore more deeply the connection between the universality of creation and the universal nature of human rights. The Pope’s recent encyclical Laudato Si will be a particular focus.

“Our consciousness as humanity is now informed by a new story of how life emerged in the universe and this in turn expanded our appreciation of our place in the wider earth community.  We now have a deeper appreciation of what it means to be and live fully human lives in the 21st Century as captured recently by Pope Francis in Laudato Si.

“The workshop is for anyone who wants to explore more deeply the spiritual dimensions and implications of the Universe Story and our gradual awakening to universal nature of Earth/Human Rights and Freedoms. The sentiments expressed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights signed by the nations of the planet in 1948 after the devastation of World War II will inform our reflections on our evolving spiritual journeys and the burning rights issues of our time.”

ERI Geneva training course

Applications are still being accepted for the Edmund Rice International training course in Human Rights and Advocacy to be offered in Geneva from Oct 31st – Nov 11th.

The course is intended for people who would have a significant role in linking the work of ERI with the local Province or region. It is hoped the participants would also be able to share the benefits of this training program with others upon their return home.

The program will include inputs on the various mechanisms of the Human Rights Council – Universal Periodic Review, Special Procedures, role of Treaty Bodies e.g. the Committee on the Rights of the Child, the opportunity to attend sessions and view the workings of the Human Rights Council at first hand, the opportunity to participate in side-events organised by other NGOs and to meet with representatives of the UN, of diplomatic missions and like-minded NGOs, including other Catholic inspired NGOs.
